📢 PARLIAMENT IS TALKING ABOUT FAMILY JUSTICE REFORM. NOW IS THE TIME TO HAVE YOUR SAY.

The way family courts deal with children and separated parents is being changed.

Parliament is already considering changes to the way parental involvement is approached, while the Government is rolling out Child Focused Courts designed to gather information about children, risks and family circumstances earlier in proceedings.

But there is a much bigger question:

What should the law look like when BOTH parents are safe, capable and want to be involved in their child's life?

My Equal Parenting & Child Voice UK proposal looks at this from the child's point of view.

The aim is not to give an automatic 50/50 arrangement to every family.

Because let's be absolutely clear:

🚨 Where abuse, rape, violence, coercive control or other serious risks exist, a 50/50 arrangement should NEVER simply be imposed.

Children need protection first.

But where there is no established safeguarding reason preventing both parents from safely parenting their child, should the system do more to support a meaningful and substantial relationship with both parents?

And should children have a stronger voice in decisions that can affect their entire childhood?

That is the conversation I believe we need to have.

My proposal sets out reforms around:

👨‍👩‍👧 Equal and meaningful parenting where it is safe
🗣️ The child's voice being properly heard
🛡️ Stronger safeguarding and risk assessment
⚖️ Evidence-based handling of abuse allegations
🏛️ Reducing unnecessary and prolonged family court delays
💬 Addressing harmful interference with a child's relationship with another parent where it is established through evidence
🔎 Getting important information in front of the court earlier

This isn't about mothers versus fathers.

It's about asking whether the family justice system can protect children from harm while also protecting their right to maintain safe and meaningful relationships with the people who love and care for them.
