According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 15.5% of Filipinos, or approximately 17.54 million people, were living in poverty in 2023. Around 10.9% of Filipino families, equivalent to about 2.99 million families, were also classified as poor.
Poverty is more than not having enough money. It can affect a person's access to education, healthcare, food, housing, and other basic needs. The World Bank also notes that unequal opportunities and differences in access to education and basic services can contribute to inequality and limit people's opportunities for upward mobility.
