Citizens of the United States,
As an unfortunate aftermath of the 2016 presidency, the Trump administration has proposed a series of Budget Cuts to take away funding from bureaucratic agencies dedicated to ensure the well-being and safety to millions of American citizens. Out of all these agencies that are having their budget reduced, the EPA overall budget would decrease by 31 percent---the biggest cut in the administration's proposal. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a federal bureau tasked with cleaning and protecting the natural environment in the United States.
With their budget cut, the EPA will suffer losing 3,200 jobs -- in addition to the number already left unfilled and loose more than 30 percent of its budget -- about $2.6 billion. This would decrease the work efficiency of many policies that the agency enforces to preserve the environment and keep it unpolluted. The budget also aims to eliminate funding entirely for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Chesapeake Bay funding, and other regional programs.
One of the consequences of lowering the EPA's budget would be limiting the Clean Water Act which is a policy designed to preserve waters' within U.S boundaries and combat water pollution. Without financial support, the Clean Water Act would be unable to enforce programs that prevent water pollution which would lead to numerous risk to the country.
Water pollution is known for causing:
"adverse health effects, including gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders". (CDC, 2014)
"Nutrient pollution fuels the growth of harmful algal blooms which devastate aquatic ecosystems. Harmful algal blooms sometimes create toxins that can kill fish and other animals...these toxins move up the food chain". (EPA)
"it can also have harmful effects on the economy. U.S. Coastal and marine waters support 28.3 million jobs, generate $54 billion in goods and services through activities like shipping, boating, and tourism, and contribute $30 billion to the U.S. economy through recreational fishing alone (Leeworthy, 2000). If pollution leads to mass die-offs of fish and dirty-looking water, this area and others like it will experience deep financial losses". (NOAA, 2008)
By signing this petition, you are convincing Congress to reject Trump's budget proposal and choose to have our representatives reinforce the Clean Water Act instead by having Congress increase the EPA Budget by $2 billion to help enforce the CWA.
