One of our members recently did a FOI request and found out some interesting facts:
Legal Assessor is paid £500 / day
Chair of Panel is paid £340
Registrant Member is paid £310
Lay Person is paid £310
That's a total of £1460 per day, before the costs of the NMC legal teams prior to hearing day and the Lawyer employed for the during of the hearing to present the NMC's case.
The NMC recently published that each hearing costs approx £13,000., based on the costs above we would argue that this is very conservative considering the additional costs on top of the NMC Panels.
Most hearings last a minimum of 3 days with those we. know about averaging at 10days
These panel members are ultimately paid for by registrant's membership fees - the same members that are infront of the panels. Many of these will be out of work, struggling to pay essential bills. Some may not be able to attend as they can neither afford to nor afford legal representation
If the case is adjourned a day - the panel members still get paid. The Registrant does not get reimbursed
If the case is adjourned for another day - the panel members still get paid. The Registrant does not get reimbursed for having to be aware from the only job he or she has managed to get whilst the investigation is going on, or get reimbursed for the money he/she has had to spend on getting to the hearing. Money that could be going on essential bills!
