Shifting Explanations, Unanswered Questions: Hold Wayland Public Schools Accountable

There is now a significant new development in the Loker music pilot.

In its latest back-to-school communication to Loker families, the district states that the 30-minute reduction in 4th- and 5th-grade instrumental music is intended to provide additional Science and Social Studies instructional time. That explanation does not match what families were previously told.

The documented record tells a very different story. What the district originally said:

On June 22, Principal Jones’s letter to families identified literacy as the reason for the change. The letter stated that:

  • Loker was facing a 160-minute weekly scheduling deficit;
  • the district was seeing a decline in ELA MCAS scores;
  • the new Caminos literacy program required Spanish Immersion students in Grades 4–5 to receive an additional 30 minutes of English literacy instruction; and
  • instrumental music would therefore be reduced from 75 minutes to 45 minutes per week.
  • The letter described the change as necessary to “support overall literacy.”

The June 10 School Committee presentation was even more specific. The slide describing the proposed Loker pilot stated: “Need 30 minutes more to teach Caminos in 4th and 5th.” That is a specific explanation for why 30 minutes of instructional time was being taken from instrumental music.

Now the explanation has changed. The district is now telling Loker families that the 30 minutes are intended to address Science and Social Studies instructional time.

So what changed?

Where did the previously stated 30-minute need for Caminos/ELA go?

If the original justification was an additional 30 minutes for Caminos and English literacy, why is the same 30 minutes now being described as necessary for Science and Social Studies?

And if Science and Social Studies now require additional time, where is the evidence showing why they require exactly 30 additional minutes—and why those minutes must come from music?

The district has not provided families with that evidence.

This raises a fundamental problem. Wanting more instructional time is not the same as demonstrating that more time is necessary. And demonstrating that more time is necessary is not the same as demonstrating that music should be sacrificed to provide it.

The district has not clearly established:

  • what specific instructional problem the 30 minutes are intended to solve;
  • how the district determined that 30 minutes is the appropriate amount;
  • where those 30 minutes will actually be used;
  • what measurable improvement the additional time is expected to produce; or
  • why reducing instrumental music is the appropriate solution.

There is also an important equity question. If the original 30-minute need was specifically tied to Caminos and English literacy in Spanish Immersion, why were all 4th- and 5th-grade students asked to give up instrumental music?

And if the justification is now Science and Social Studies, why is music still the program being asked to absorb the loss?

These are not minor differences in wording. They are different explanations for the same 30-minute reduction.

Families deserve a clear and consistent justification. The issue is not whether Science, Social Studies, literacy, or any other subject is important. Of course they all are. The issue is whether the district has demonstrated a specific educational need or deficit and developed a coherent, evidence-based plan to address it before taking instructional time away from music.

Parents should not have to piece together different explanations from different district communications to understand why their children are losing 40% of their weekly instrumental music instruction.

If the district has evidence that this reduction is necessary, families deserve to see it. If 30 minutes is the solution, the district should be able to explain why. And if music is the program being reduced, the district should be able to explain why.

Until those questions are answered, families have every reason to question whether this pilot is actually driven by a demonstrated instructional need—or whether music was simply the easiest program to reduce.

We Need to Show Up and Demand Answers! The district has been disregarding the communities outcries and is moving forward with this pilot. That is precisely why families need to show up and speak up now.  The district should reconcile its June communications, School Committee presentation, and current back-to-school messaging and provide families with a clear, consistent, evidence-based explanation for this decision. Our children should not lose valuable music instruction based on shifting explanations and an unexplained 30-minute tradeoff. This petition is not simply about expressing disagreement. It is about demanding accountability for a decision that directly affects our children's education.

We need to ask the Wayland Public Schools and School Committee to:

  • Publicly explain the actual educational need this 30-minute reduction is intended to address;
  • Provide the data and evidence supporting the decision;
  • Explain why 30 minutes is necessary and why music was selected to absorb that loss;
  • Reconcile the conflicting explanations provided in June and in the district's current back-to-school communication; and
  • Listen to the families directly affected by this decision.

Now is the time to show up.

The next School Committee meeting is Monday, August 24, 2026, at 6:00 PM. The district has also scheduled a Loker Caregiver Q&A for Tuesday, August 25, at 7:00 PM—just ONE day later.

If you care about music education in Wayland, please attend. If you are a Loker caregiver, please attend both. Ask the questions. Demand the data. And make sure the district hears directly from the families whose children are losing this instructional time.

We should not have to accept a 30-minute reduction in music without a clear, consistent, evidence-based explanation of why it is necessary.
