Hi supporters!
Thank you so much for adding your voice to our call. It's important that we all speak up as a community to ensure our youth are provided with opportunities to participate in their communities, schools, and with their peers as much as they want to in an accommodate capacity.
I write to provide you an update. My friend's son has been allowed to play the last two days since this petition went up, and I have no doubt in my mind that this petition and your signatures played a viral part in this decision.
There is still work to do. Neither the school district nor Challenge Alaska have changed the policy to reflect that a GPA is not needed to participate in paralympic adaptive sports. I'm hesitant to declare any kind of long term victory because I don't want another student to fall into this gap next year or the year after. I'm hopeful you will continue to lift your voice with us in a call for policy change.
Disabled students don't have the option to be Life Skills or Diploma Track. Their track should not preclude them from participating in adaptive sports simply because it is impossible for them to achieve the required GPA (Life Skills does not offer a GPA).
Thank you all for your support and your continued support. I've attached the face of a very excited individual for whom your support and voice means a lot.
