The Issue

The sun-blazed streets of Cagayan de Oro can be unforgiving. As temperatures soar relentlessly, ensuring access to safe, cool drinking water has turned into a non-negotiable priority. As a resident, I've witnessed daily commuters, outdoor workers, and students, who brave the scorching heat without the assurance of a cool sip to hydrate their dry throats. It's not just uncomfortable; it's a serious health risk.

Imagine being a construction worker laboring under the midday sun, constantly losing fluids without a reliable, affordable way to replenish them. This scenario is tragically common for many outdoor workers and others who have to traverse the city each day. We have seen friends, family members, and vulnerable residents, including children and the elderly, who have become susceptible to dehydration-related illnesses like heatstroke, simply because they have no access to drinking water stations or cannot afford bottled water.

Access to drinking water is fundamentally tied to public health and safety. The World Health Organization asserts that each person requires between 2.5 to 3 liters daily to maintain health, which can rise immensely in hotter climates. Yet, in Cagayan de Oro, multiple drinking water fountains are either outdated, in disrepair, or nonexistent, leaving thousands stranded without this critical resource.

I propose that local city officials prioritize the installation and maintenance of water refill stations around the city. By strategically placing these stations near bus terminals, marketplaces, schools, and parks, we can help ensure that all residents have regular access to fresh, potable water. Additionally, encouraging partnerships between the city government and local businesses could help subsidize these efforts, reducing the financial burden on local authorities.

Research from around the world indicates a strong correlation between access to public drinking water and overall public health. The City of Paris successfully installed hundreds of free drinking water spots throughout its streets, prompting a significant decrease in dehydration-related health concerns. Such an initiative could be our blueprint and inspiration.

This initiative is entirely feasible and crucial for the well-being of our community. We must act swiftly to protect our residents, ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment for everyone.

I urge city officials and concerned citizens to join this mission to provide safe, cool drinking water. With your support, we can make access to adequate hydration a reality for all Cagayan de Oro residents.

Please sign this petition and help make our community a safer, healthier place for everyone.
