Save Durham Cottage by listing it so it is protected from any future developers.

The Issue

Durham Cottage  was due to be auctioned on Tuesday 29th July but no buyer was successful in meeting the reserve, so it is still for sale. Please sign this petition to help us preserve Durham Cottage by having it listed as a Listed Building with English Heritage.

Located at 4 Christchurch Street, Chelsea, SW3 4AP, Durham cottage is the iconic love nest purchased in 1937 by Laurence Olivier for himself and fellow theatre and film star, Vivien Leigh. It served as their base of operations in London for 19 years. The unique character of this property is vital to the London street scene and having it listed by English Heritage is integral to saving and preserving this stand alone, vulnerable property.

Durham Cottage is of significant architectural importance, and unique in the Chelsea neighbourhood. By listing Durham Cottage with English Heritage it will save it from any possible developers and major alterations to its character and structure and from negatively impacting the unique Chelsea neighbourhood character.

Additionally, Durham Cottage is deserving of a Blue Plaque to commemorate two of England's greatest exports, Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, their contributions on screen and stage, and their unique place in British History. They served to inspire their fellow citizens during WWII as examples of loyal British countrymen.

They were Britain’s Theatre Royalty, a huge part of our Performing Arts history and their home deserves protecting and preserving.

Please sign the petition and show English Heritage how much we care about saving this wonderful building.
