Volunteers assisting the FOW to Save The Wissahickon Creek

This was just some of the litter and garbage collected on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

A handful of volunteers joined in the fight with the Friends of The Wissahickon to assist in cleaning up the massive amounts of garbage and litter that is polluting the Wissahickon Creek, directly resulting from these unlawful swim parties. These images are only from the Devil's Pool area and represent a mere fraction of the garbage being dumped and left behind all throughout Wissahickon Valley Park.

The sad thing is - that the FOW - who have been fighting this war against the destruction of the Wissahickon Creek for many years now, ALONE - stated that the amount of garbage collected was significantly less than it generally is. But the FOW had already been to Devil's Pool with other groups of volunteers TWICE within the previous two weeks.

As you can see, there are SEVERAL unlawful and prohibited makeshift barbeque pits in this area. The photos do not represent the whole, as I must have counted at least TEN on both sides of the Creek in the Devil's Pool area. This is a major fire hazard, not to mention prohibited in the park.

These unlawful swim parties that are in violation of park rules are the direct cause for the massive amount of litter and garbage dumping that is increasing pollution in the Wissahickon Creek. Not to mention, the amount of toxic human waste being left all throughout the area is dangerous. The Wissahickon Creek is an ecologically fragile watershed. It must be protected.

The Wissahickon Creek belongs to all of us.  We must fight to stop the unlawful trash dumping and in order to do that we must fight for the enforcement of the law and park rules which strictly prohibit swimming, open-flame barbequing, loud music, and littering, because without the enforcement of the rules, the Wissahickon Creek will not survive.

The Friends of The Wissahickon have available two more Volunteer Devil's Pool Clean-up Days  scheduled for the month of August :  Tuesday, 18th, and Tuesday, 25th, weather permitting.  Sign-up is free.
