The Issue

I have always been concerned about the inadequate payment and working conditions within the security sector in South Africa. I personally know many security guards who have tirelessly worked long hours, often in high-risk environments, for wages that barely allow them to make ends meet. It is a reality that many South African security officers face, one that urgently needs rectification.

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) is responsible for regulating South Africa's private security industry to ensure compliance, professionalism, and respect for human rights within the industry. One of PSIRA’s critical mandates is to determine a fair and equitable wage for security officers, known as the PSIRA rate. Unfortunately, not all security companies adhere to this wage standard, leading to an industry full of exploitation.

Statistically, the private security industry in South Africa is one of the largest in the world, with hundreds of thousands of registered security officers. Yet, many of these officers receive salaries far below the PSIRA prescribed rate. According to a recent report by the South African Private Security Workers Union, over 40% of security companies flout PSIRA regulations, leaving their employees vulnerable and underpaid.

By signing this petition, we urge PSIRA to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that all security companies comply with the prescribed wage rates and labor regulations. This includes conducting more frequent and rigorous inspections of registered security companies and imposing severe penalties on those found guilty of non-compliance.

We further appeal to the South African government to provide PSIRA with the necessary support and resources to enhance their regulatory and enforcement capacity. Appropriate legislative measures should also be introduced to safeguard the rights of security officers and to ensure that they receive fair compensation for their work.

Your signature can help put an end to the exploitation of security guards in South Africa. Join us in demanding a fair and just working environment for these essential workers. Sign the petition now and be part of the change!
