The Issue

In Kern County, dogs are being abused and abandoned at an alarming rate. It breaks my heart every time I hear about another incident where a defenseless animal has suffered because of insufficient enforcing and a lack of prosecuting . Each case of cruelty and neglect not only affects the animal involved but also weakens the moral fabric of our community.

In Bakersfield and throughout Kern County, numerous animals are left to fend for themselves, death due to abandonment. Even more tragic are the dogs who are subjected to physical abuse, living in constant fear and pain, at the hands of their supposed caretakers. This cannot continue. Our community must navigate towards a future where animals are not just seen as property but as living beings deserving of protection and care.

It is imperative that we push for enforcing laws and prosecuting abusers that will deter others from committing similar acts of cruelty. We need to enforce regulations, severe fines, and penalties for those found guilty of abusing or neglecting animals. Additionally, there should be a mandatory reporting system for suspected abuse cases and more robust animal rescue and welfare services available for those in need.

According to recent statistics, animal abuse cases have seen a disturbing increase over the past years, partly due to the current lack of sufficient legal deterrents. Kern County can set a precedent by enforcing comprehensive animal protection laws that safeguard our pets and deter would-be abusers.
