Act now to save netball at Broomfield Park
The Issue
For 70 years at Broomfield Park, on every alternate Saturdays from September to April, the North London Netball League (NLNL) has been enabling over 800 women and girls, from ages 10 to 70, of all abilities and from all ethnic backgrounds, to take part in the team sport they love.
The courts are currently in a state of disrepair, and the NLNL has sometimes had to cancel matches because the surface is too dangerous to facilitate play. Together with the Parks Department, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), and Southgate Green ward councillors, the League has collaborated to secure £150k in funding from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, and a further £100k from Sport England towards the cost of the refurbishment of the netball/tennis courts. The Sport England grant is conditional on floodlighting being installed. Without planning approval for the floodlights, the entire project may fail due to the loss of this funding. There is a real danger that netball will no longer be played in Broomfield Park after this season.
The application to the Enfield Planning Committee on 21st May 2020 was deferred because "Members’ concern that evidence was not available in respect of existing or projected usage and need for tennis and netball at the sports courts." The NLNL and LTA have provided the statistics used to obtain the grant funding to the Enfield Parks Department.
We ask that you show your support for the continuation of netball at Broomfield Park by approving the planning application being heard next Tuesday, 7th July 2020.
Netball offers the development of physical health and of mental health in abundance. Bearing in mind the link between Covid-19 mortality and underlying health issues, now more than ever, councils should be investing in community sports facilities.
