There has been some movement on Foot and Mouth Disease. Current blood samples are being sent by Minister Steenhuisen to the Pirbright Institute in the UK to check vaccine matching. This is the first time this has happened in many years. While this step is welcome, it is too little and too late on its own.
What South Africa urgently needs is legislative change so that outbreaks can be prevented and controlled before they spiral into national disasters. Waiting for crisis response is not a strategy.
Why Foot and Mouth Disease affects every South African:
• It disrupts meat and dairy supply, driving food prices up for everyone
• It threatens food security and jobs across the value chain
• It shuts down export markets and damages the economy
• It impacts tourism, transport and rural communities, not only farmers
This is not a farming issue. It is a national issue.
