We've past 1500 signatures! Thank you for the powerful words of support posted here and sent to us directly. Your impact has amplified our message, and we look forward to sharing conversations we're having on the topic in the coming weeks.
Today's message is one of hope as we continue to build capacity to teach and momentum to challenge this ban at the local and provincial level this coming school year:
We're one of many organizations fighting the bans on books, threats to educators who teach Critical Race Theory, and protests against SOGIE education (Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Gender Expression) across Canada and the US. Now, schools, districts, and governing bodies at all levels must be held accountable for a system that fails to represent history and humanity with truth and care. In Vancouver, many people are shocked because our city is marketed as being progressive in many areas. But, like all colonial projects, history reveals that discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, and ability is embedded into Vancouver's origin story, with a legacy that remains today, woven into the ideological fabric of longstanding institutions. It's hard to have conversations on accountability when you are told that you are the problem for noticing a problem. When you aren't allowed inside.
When we couldn't get inside, we had a space of our own: a library of film, lectures, art, and books in the most accessible place we could think of, the world wide web. This is a beautiful space, but we know that the capacity to continue this work, and do more happens in a collective and collaborative hub, irl. So, to support Vancouver students and educators, we are building a place where they can come to us when we can't get to them.
A journey toward home - a library, studio, and education space designed to host conversations, mentor educators in equitable teaching practices, support student's research, and present new models of learning and evaluation. We thank you for your support here, and invite you to be part of our next goal - seed funding for I Dream Library and Center for Education Design™️.
While we fight to end the bans, the irrational fear of who we are, our history, and our voices, I Dream Library will be a home that educators, artists and community can to return to.
This, is a place of our own.
