The Issue

For countless individuals and families, escaping the vicious cycle of debt is an unending struggle. As someone who is continuously drowning in debt despite every effort to rise above it, I am personally affected by the suffocating grip of high-interest loans. These loans, often the only lifeline available, quickly turn into debt traps that squeeze every ounce of opportunity and dignity out of life.

The economic burden is heavy and relentless. While large financial institutions benefit from borrowing at minimal federal rates, they exploit the most vulnerable by charging exorbitant interest rates. Current federal regulations, or the lack thereof, allow predatory lenders to capitalize on those who can least afford it, turning a blind eye to the financial distress they foster. Reports have shown that marginalized communities, particularly low-income families and people of color, are disproportionately affected by these unjust practices. According to the National Consumer Law Center, interest rates on payday loans often exceed 300%, inflicting more pain and hardship on those already struggling.

We demand legislative action to limit interest rates at a federal level. Establishing a cap on interest rates is not just a necessity; it is a moral imperative. This petition calls on members of the United States Congress, Members of Parliament, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to implement and enforce interest rate caps that protect marginal borrowers. By setting a maximum interest rate of 36% APR, akin to the Military Lending Act which protects service members, Congress can help millions avoid destructive debt cycles.

We urge policymakers to work towards enacting comprehensive reforms that ensure transparent lending practices and accountability. Empower the CFPB to act decisively against lenders who prey on the vulnerable and use deceptive tactics to ensnare borrowers into high-cost loans. Strengthen financial literacy programs and offer support and counseling to educate consumers on responsible borrowing and effective debt management.

This is not just about financial equity; it's about human dignity and the opportunity for a better future for all Americans. Lowering these predatory rates would not only alleviate immediate financial burdens but help foster financial independence and growth at community levels.

Join us in this crucial fight for economic justice and sign this petition. Demand change for yourself, your neighbors, and the countless others without a voice or choice. Together, we can end the exploitation and create a fairer, more just financial system for all.
