Success, it’s DONE! Governor Abbott has signed SB 1566 and it is destined to become law, we are now #ShameFreeTX, WOOT! WOOT! First of all, I need to thank the folks at Change.org for helping me initiate this petition and for their guidance, which helped ensure petition success. Thanks are also due to several folks who helped me spread the word about this issue. Thank you KXXV, News Channel 25, reporter Pattrik Simmons, for determining this issue to be newsworthy and granting me my first interviews. The media exposure was crucial to the success of this petition. Thanks to Ms. Phyllis Jones for the radio interview on KISS, 103.1 FM. Thanks are due Houston Chronicle reporter, Ms. Emily Foxhall, for enlightening the Houston area. Thank you WFAA reporter, Mr. Jason Whitely for covering the story and making the Dallas area aware that lunch shaming was indeed a Texas problem. Thanks are due to Copperas Cove Leader Press reporter Lynette Sowell for an excellent story in my hometown newspaper. Thanks are due to Chief-of-Staff to Rep. Helen Giddings’, Ms. Tamara Saddler, for your support and for steering media contacts in my direction. Thanks to petition supporter, Ms. Spenta Cama, for reaching out all the way from New York and putting me in contact with Mr. Wade Goodwyn for my NPR interview; Likewise, thanks to Mr. Goodwyn for that engaging NPR interview. Thanks to Mr. Scott Hughes for the encouraging phone calls and sage advice. Thanks to New Mexico State Senators Linda M. Lopez and Michael Padilla for successfully sponsoring an anti-lunch shaming bill, and thanks to New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez for signing that bill into law. New Mexico became the first state to address lunch shaming statewide thus giving the issue a much-needed boost in national media attention. A very special thanks are due Texas State Rep. Helen Giddings for being bold enough to take this issue on, knowing it would be a difficult fight, and then for absolutely refusing to let the issue die despite orchestrated opposition in the legislature. Without her willingness to step forward this issue would surely not have been addressed during the 85th legislative session. Much thanks to the following Texas legislators: Rep. Diego Bernal, District 123 (D-San Antonio), Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., District 27 (D-Brownsville), Sen. Borris L. Miles, District 13 (D-Houston), and Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, District 18 (R-Brenham), for allowing Rep. Helen Giddings to amend the bills they were sponsoring in order to include anti-lunch shaming language. These legislators were willing to place their own bills in jeopardy by allowing such amendments. Of course thanks to all the petition supporters who endured my incessant posts and updates and still shared, tweeted and emailed links to this petition, giving it additional media exposure, I’m just one guy, it was YOUR efforts that kept this issue alive. Thanks for all the positive comments, for they inspired me to keep pushing. Thanks for all the negative comments, for they inspired me to push that much harder. And last but certainly not least, thanks to my wife Cassandra, for putting up with me talking about, writing about and stressing over this issue for the past 15 months. We are #ShameFreeTX!
