Today, Rep. Helen Giddings, representing Texas District 109, filed HB 2159. The bill is NOT the amendment to HB 3562 that I have been seeking for the past year but it definitely appears to be inspired by the language of my proposal. HB 2159 requires at least a two week grace period during which students can continue to charge meals, it also includes language written to avoid stigmatizing or embarrassing students who have low meal account balances. This fight is not over, this bill has a long way to go before becoming Texas law, if ever. Your support is still needed, let the Texas legislature know that this issue is important to YOU! BTW, I am still a bit partial to the language of my amendment proposal but then again, I'm a bit biased :-)
