"Athens I.S.D. has a “No Charge” policy, therefore, your child needs to have money or funds on account." When students do not have adequate funds in their school meal accounts the Athens Independent School District (ISD), located about 70 miles southeast of Dallas, provides students an alternative meal, in this case a cheese sandwich, fresh whole fruit and milk. I'd imagine that a student who complained of lactose intolerance would be told "Enjoy your fruit." Providing alternative meal sack lunches DOES insure that students receive something to eat, although I did once see a 2nd grader refuse to eat such a meal, I assume due to embarrassment. Regardless the real cause, a student receiving a sack lunch instead of a standard meal tray says that the family might be struggling financially which can lead to teasing and embarrassment, as in the case of the 2nd grader. The goal of my petition is to ensure that students continue to receive standard meals while any financial hardships or simple oversights are addressed within a reasonable timeframe. This is merely an update, the school meal petition can be located here - https://www.change.org/p/4-year-olds-are-being-denied-school-meals-because-their-meal-accounts-are-low-and-it-s-just-cruel?recruiter=30933187&utm_source=petitions_show_components_action_panel_wrapper&utm_medium=copylink Thank you all for your continued support and please continue sharing and promoting this petition, the Texas legislature meets again in January 2017.
