I was contacted by a Texas legislator, I will neither name nor quote the person because I have not been given permission to do so, also, I prefer that politicians make their OWN statements so that THEY are on the record. Obviously the legislator was not supportive of this petition or this update would have a very different tone. The legislator's response lets me know that this petition still needs to reach more people in order to gain more signatures, both within Texas and without. This petition is not asking schools to do anything that they are not ALREADY PREPARED TO DO, the meals are already prepared, nothing new is being purchased, there is no additional tax burden - I am simply asking that districts require schools to serve the meals to students as intended. Serve the students and where appropriate, bill the parents/guardians. The bottom line is this, who gains when a meal tray is confiscated and dumped . . . it's pretty obvious who loses.
