Every junior at our high school, Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, is required to choose a social justice issue and attempt to find solutions and garner support among the community. It is called the Praxis Project, and it draws on the Catholic Social Teaching we learn in our religion class. While researching various topics available—health care, immigration, terrorism—we (Claire Burke, Emma Horrigan, and Stephanie Irving) realized that human trafficking is an issue involving many other social justice issues, yet it is a problem with a magnitude not many are aware of. We chose it hoping to raise awareness and influence those in or area to help those in the fight to begin to end human trafficking, not just in the D.C. Area, but in the country and world as a whole. We want legislation passed to provide aid to victims of human trafficking, and to further punish and rehabilitate perpetrators of this terrible trade.
