For the 8th day in a row I have had to sit and watch my sister moan and cry in pain because with very rare exception the demonstratively inept and apathetic medical staff, doctor choose to do nothing other than load my sister up with morphine twice a day. When I arrive today I found her left knee abnormally swollen and ridged. A closer examination showed her she could not bend her leg at all and her patella was completely immobile. Her fibula appeared extremely prominent. When I notified the nurse she became very agitated and then pressed on it and said she didn't think it was swollen, that she saw no edema. Lesson 1 - swelling from an injury and edema from retaining fluid while similar are two different types of swelling. You can gauge edema by the skin remaining indented when you press on it. Swelling from an injury especially a new injury will return to its normal form. Where do they get the nurses from? She admits she doesn't know what is normal for my sister so how in the world can you say it's not swollen? Why then get angry and an attitude because you have to call the doctor and let them know. Notifying the doctor of injuries or changes in a patients status is a part of their job. They called in the X-ray contractor to take an X-ray of someone but just wheeled right past my sisters room ignoring her knee. Just because my sister has a brain injury does NOT mean she is not entitled to the same level of care we all would receive, the same level of care Judge Shannon, Governor Mcauliffe would expect their kids would receive. As usual her guardians are absent. I sent them an email informing them of the injury and included the doctors direct line. I also copied the Virginia Health Department director, the long term care ombudsman, our delegate, senator, and congresswoman on the email. It is abominable Joe the hospital and doctors have treated Anastasia and how her guardians have ignored the issues brought to their attention.
