Petition updateEnd Female Genital Mutilation in IndiaWelcoming the ban on FGM among bohras in Australia and UK
Speak out on FGM
Feb 16, 2016
Dear Supporters, We wanted to let you know about a very heartening development in Australia and the United Kingdom! In November 2015, Australia’s first prosecution of a Bohra female genital mutilation case ended in a guilty verdict over procedures on 2 girls when they were about seven years old. The three Bohras were convicted for FGM in contravention to the Australian law. After the Australian courts clearly ruled FGM illegal and a clear violation of the Country's laws, the Bohra Jamaat in Australia has recently issued a unanimously passed decree banning the practice of FGM among Australian Bohras. Such a decree was also passed by the UK jamaat. On behalf of speak out on FGM we want to thank the Australian Jamaat and the UK jamaat for issuing such a strong and clear worded decree calling upon all the bohras in Australia and the UK to ban FGM and to henceforth stop practicing it. This is a far-sighted and welcome move. We, a group of Bohra women are running a similar campaign in India, 45,000 people have supported us by signing our petition on Change.org. We and the petition signers hope to see an end to FGM in India too. This development shows us that change can come in the community and leaders if the laws of the country lead the way. Thank you all for your support, with your help, we can end FGM in India too!
