Growing up, I have witnessed countless instances of abuse against women and children in my community and across the globe. This is not something I have only observed in the media; it is a grim reality that many face daily. I believe firmly that women should have the right to live free from violence and make their own choices about their bodies and their future. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a violation of these rights and an abuse of human dignity. It must end now.

FGM is a harmful traditional practice that affects over 200 million girls and women alive today in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, often causing severe pain, bleeding, infection, long-term health issues, and complications in childbirth.
