End discriminatory hair policies in schools for black girls
The Issue
This week, I experienced a heart-wrenching moment that no young girl should ever endure. I watched a video of young black girls being forced to shave their hair before being allowed to attend school. They were told their natural hair was untidy and undisciplined. As a young black girl myself, I know the weight of this unjust burden and feel compelled to act.
In many schools, particularly in regions with outdated policies, black girls are subjected to discriminatory rules that enforce harmful stereotypes about beauty and professionalism. This is not just about hair—it's about identity, culture, and the right to education without discrimination. The expectation for black girls to alter their natural appearance to fit arbitrary norms is a painful reminder of a larger, systemic issue. According to a study by the Perception Institute, black girls are 3.5 times more likely to be suspended from school because of subjective and racially-biased dress code policies.
It is time for educational institutions to embrace diversity and promote inclusivity. Schools should implement fair policies that respect all students and celebrate cultural differences, rather than attempting to erase them. This change can start with consulting experts in cultural diversity and inclusion, revising outdated dress codes, and educating staff about implicit biases.
We call upon educational authorities and government bodies to immediately address and revise these regressive policies. By taking action, we can prevent further harm and create a schooling environment where every student feels valued and respected for who they are, not who they’re pressured to become.
Join me in demanding an end to these oppressive hair policies in schools. Every signature brings us one step closer to change. Sign this petition to help pave the way for a fair and inclusive educational system for black girls everywhere.
