Animal abuse in Albania is rampant. Every year, thousands of dogs are cruelly killed — by lethal injection, poisoning, or shooting. There is ample proof — video footage, photos, and reports — provided by local animal protection associations, animal activists, and tourists.

There are laws on the books to protect dogs and cats from this cruel treatment and death. These laws are rarely, if ever, enforced. 

Saranda’s civic leaders — particularly the new mayor and new police chief — have the power and authority to put these laws into action. Saranda can set a strong example and lead the way in advancing animal welfare in Albania.
