SUPERMARKETS WASTE MILLIONS OF TONNES OF EDIBLE CROPS AS NEED FOR FREE FOOD AT HISTORICAL HIGH

The Trussell Trust has reported that a need for free food sources have reached historical high levels, with "approximately 454,750" people turning to food banks to feed themselves, an increase of 99,790 people when compared to 2023. 

However, food banks are struggling to cope due to a fall in donations, overstretched teams, and insufficient supplies from supermarkets, and they fail to deliver the nutritional value that humans need due to the compromise caused by the food's long shelf life and easiness to prepare.

One of the main reasons soup kitchens are so scarce and food banks are not able to deliver enough food is because both lack support from supermarkets. However, supermarkets waste UP TO 40% of fruit and vegetable crops because they are deemed 'ugly'.

This petition stands for the government implementing a compulsory rule on large name supermarkets [Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi etc.] that means they must give at least 50%* of 'ugly' fruit and vegetable crops, that would have otherwise been wasted, to soup kitchens across the UK. 

*this amount originally would have gone to a landfill, the other 50% is split between being used as animal food and compost.
