Friends of “CLEAN” adoption reform, Greetings! Late last night, the Albany legislative session ended. This petition continues! Most likely, NY Assembly and Senate representatives will not convene again until the next session officially starts, in January 2017. ON JUNE 7TH, WE BECAME CONCERNED WHEN: 1. The Assembly did NOT restore their “CLEAN” reform bill. Instead, they approved, and sent to the Senate, the version that would NOT honor adoptee human and civil rights (A2901-C). 2. The Senate was given a choice between the “CLEAN” version that still exists there (S3314) and the one we oppose (S5964-B), which is the “same as” the Assembly bill (A2901-C). BETWEEN JUNE 8TH AND JUNE 17TH: 1. Our appeal was shared with the Senate as follows: a. Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan b. Chairs of the Health (S3314) and Children and Families (S5964-B) Committees c. Dozens of named cosponsors for the “CLEAN” version (S3314) d. NOTE: The bill we oppose (S5964-B) has ZERO cosponsors! 2. The “CLEAN” reform bill was not restored in the Assembly 3. No floor vote took place in the Senate 4. Nothing was sent to the Governor for signature 5. Our appeal helped keep “CLEAN” reform a real, perhaps growing, possibility for 2017! FOR JUNE – DECEMBER 2016, WE WILL: • Grow and deliver this petition (please keep sharing!) • Continue outreach to Albany • Appeal for reintroduction of “CLEAN” reform in both houses • Ask autumn political candidates to support “CLEAN” adoption reform • Keep you posted IN 2017, WE WILL: • Grow and deliver this petition • Advocate for a “CLEAN” NY Law of Adoptee Rights, for unrestricted access to original birth certificates—to get reform right the first time!
