Enact a dedicated anti-racism law in India
The Issue
To the government of India and the parliament of India,
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of India and Parliament to enact a strong, dedicated anti-racism law to protect people from Northeast India within India.
The Problem
The death of Ch. Vikram Singh is not an isolated tragedy. It is a part of a familiar and shameful pattern: insults in public, racial slurs in schools, colleges and hostels, discriminations in housing and workplaces and violence that begins with contempt and ends in harm. For years, people from the Northeast have had to live with the burden of being treated as “different”, “foreign”, or “less Indian” in their own country.
THIS MUST BE NAMED FOR WHAT IT IS: RACISM. This is real, repeated and often denied.
Too often, these abuses are dismissed as teasing, misunderstood or bad manners. They are not. They are acts of exclusion that chip away at dignity and safety. Some bodies are treated as more vulnerable than others. They create a climate where some citizens are treated as less protected than others. No democracy can accept that one section of its citizens must constantly defend its right to belong.
Our Demand
India needs a LAW that clearly recognizes racial discrimination against people from the Northeast and gives victims real protection. We call on the Government and parliament to:
- Enact a dedicated anti racism law with clear definitions and penalties
- Establish fast, accessible complaint mechanisms for victims.
- Criminalize racial abuse, hate speech, housing discrimination and workplace
- Mandate sensitization training for police, employers, landlords, schools and public institutions.
- Launch public awareness campaigns that challenge stereotypes and make racism visible.
Why This Matters
Law alone will not solve everything, but without law the problem remains easy to deny and easy to repeat. A clear legal framework will not erase prejudice overnight, but it will draw a line. People from the Northeast should not have to earn safety, prove belonging or live with the fear that a face, a name, or an accent can make them a target.
We call on the Government of India to act now before the next tragedy.
Sign this petition to demand dignity, safety and equal protection for people from the Northeast India within India.
