Despite this petition being active for many months, tree destruction is once again occurring across our streets - this time during the height of summer.
The same contractor, Ventia, responsible for significant tree damage last April has returned. Trees that were already heavily cut have had little chance to recover. New foliage is minimal, yet remaining branches, upper trunks, and regrowth are now being removed.
Council refused to answer our question related to payment of these butchers. My guess is they are paid in a way that incentivises the removal of as much material as possible - not careful, ecologically responsible pruning.
This work is occurring:
• During extreme heat
• During peak stress periods for wildlife
• With no visible consideration for nesting, shelter, or food sources
• On trees that were previously damaged and are still recovering
Urban trees are not decorative extras - they are critical habitat. They provide:
• Shade that reduces heat stress
• Nesting and refuge for birds, possums, and other wildlife
• Cooling for streets and homes
• Carbon storage and erosion control
Council has been made aware of these concerns previously. Inspections were promised. Yet destruction continues.
This petition calls on Council to:
• Immediately halt non-essential tree works during summer and heat events
• End weight-based contracts that encourage excessive removal
• Implement independent ecological oversight of all tree works
• Protect existing native canopy, especially previously damaged trees
• Prioritise wildlife, climate resilience, and community wellbeing over convenience and cost-cutting
We cannot keep stripping our streets bare and then act surprised when wildlife disappears and heat impacts worsen.
Enough has been taken.
Feel free to leave poor google reviews for Ventia - both their Melbourne and Mornington offices. Thanks
