Up to 4,000 prisoners to be released early to ease coronavirus crisis in jails

"After weeks of resisting demands for such a move, Robert Buckland, the Justice Secretary, announced on Saturday that offenders jailed for “low-level” offences such as theft and drug possession and due for release within the next two months will be let out within days.

It comes just two days after two of Britain’s leading prison charities, Prison Reform Trust and Howard League warned that failure to act could lead to loss of life on an unprecedented scale."
