Freedom of expression has long been presented as one of the core principles of X under Elon Musk. Yet recent developments in Türkiye raise serious questions about how consistently that principle is being upheld.

According to X’s own transparency data, hundreds of thousands of requests concerning content in Türkiye were submitted within a period of just six months, with action taken on 85.66 percent of those requests.

The consequences are increasingly visible. Women’s rights organizations, LGBTQ+ groups, independent journalists, human rights defenders, university communities, and many other voices have faced restrictions that limit their ability to speak and reach audiences on X.

In recent months, the issue has gone beyond the removal of individual posts. Tens of thousands of accounts have reportedly become inaccessible from Türkiye. With a single restriction, accounts followed by hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of people can effectively disappear from public view inside the country.

Freedom of expression is one of the foundations of a democratic society, and social media platforms now play an extraordinary role in protecting the spaces where public debate takes place. In Türkiye, that space is becoming increasingly restricted.

Elon Musk should directly address what is happening on X in Türkiye and ensure that the platform’s stated commitment to freedom of expression is applied consistently, transparently, and without political double standards.

This is not merely a Turkish issue. It deserves international attention.

In the digital age, open communication has become inseparable from the freedom to question power, report events, organize, disagree, and be heard. When entire communities can be made invisible with the click of a button, the consequences reach far beyond a single platform.

We call on Elon Musk and X to protect freedom of expression in Türkiye, provide greater transparency about government requests and account restrictions, and review restrictions that silence lawful expression.

The principles X claims to defend should apply everywhere.

If freedom of expression matters, it must also matter when defending it is difficult.

İfade özgürlüğü, Elon Musk'ın yönettiği X platformunun temel ilkelerinden biri olarak tanımlanıyor. Ancak Türkiye'de yaşanan son olaylar bu iddianın gerçekliğini sorgulatıyor. Demokrasinin önemli ayağı olan ifade özgürlüğünün, sosyal medya platformları tarafından korunması gerekmektedir. Türkiye'de bu durumun tersine dönmesi gerekiyor. Elon Musk, X platformunun CEO'su olarak bu duruma doğrudan müdahil olmalı ve ifade özgürlüğü ilkesini koruma altına almalıdır.

Bu konu, sadece Türkiye'nin değil, tüm dünyanın dikkatini gerektiriyor. Özgür bir toplumun temel taşı olan özgür ve açık iletişim, dijital çağda her zamankinden daha büyük bir öneme sahiptir. Değişim için ayağa kalkma zamanı geldi.
