You’ve heard correctly; the theatre faculty were informed on Thursday that Elizabethtown College has made the decision to eliminate the entire theatre degree program, both the major and the minor, as well as both tenured faculty positions effective July 1, 2020. It has been in the news that cutting the theatre and philosophy degree programs, as well as a few other minors, will affect only 1% of the student body. We strongly disagree with this statement for, as you all know, the theatre program and productions impact far more than current majors. Not only will students in a range of other degree programs miss the artistic and social education of working on a play or musical, but students who were theatregoers will no longer be educated or entertained by this ancient art at this college. We have been blessed to work with and get to know so many of you, major and non-major students and alumni, over these past years. It is with sadness that we plan to bid farewell to this program after the coming year, and acknowledge the fact we will no longer be able to provide productions for the Elizabethtown College student body and surrounding community."
