Make Abner Garcia an Honorary Posthumous Chicago Police Officer

On August 13, 2016 Abner Garcia was shot and killed in Chicago, Illinois. Abner Garcia was an innocent victim to Chicago's gun violence. Mr. Garcia was a 23 year old veteran. He resided in Chicago's Garfield Ridge neighborhood. Abner attended Curie High School and enlisted in the military. His military service took him to Anchorage, Alaska. Upon returning to Chicago, he enrolled at UIC, the University Of Illinois at Chicago, where he was studying Criminal Justice. Mr. Garcia was a mentor to Chicago's at risk youth through the YMCA's Urban Warrior program.
Mr. Garcia mentored at risk youth and believed in volunteering his time to try and make Chicago's violent streets a bit safer. Mr. Garcia's dream was to become a Chicago Police Officer. Abner was taking all the necessary steps to achieve that goal. Through his sacrifice and dedication with his military experience, to studying at UIC and to volunteering at the YMCA, Abner Garcia was truly a contributing and positive member of our society. Abner Garcia would have made a great Chicago Police Officer.
The violence that plagues Chicago's streets robbed Abner Garcia of his life. We as a society, suffered a great loss the day Abner died. We were robbed of the chance to see his continued contributions to Chicago. We were robbed of seeing Abner Garcia achieve his goal of becoming a Chicago Police Officer. The youth he mentored was robbed of a caring and dedicated mentor.
Chicago's gun violence took the life of Abner Garcia's uncle Jesus Juarez on May 4, 2016 in Chicago's Pilsen Neighborhood. Mr. Juarez was an innocent victim. Just 3 months later, the Juarez Garcia family lost Abner Garcia to that same gun violence.
As a resident of the City of Chicago, I believe that we need to comfort the Juarez Garcia family. Our city and a couple of our own have robbed this family of 2 immediate family members within 3 months of each other due to gun violence.
I am petitioning to have Abner Garcia recognized as an Honorary Posthumous Chicago Police Officer. Please sign this petition and share this petition. I am asking our Mayor Rahm Emanuel, our elected officials and the Chicago Police Department to honor Abner Garcia and make him an honorary posthumous Chicago Police Officer.
