Growing up, each of us carried heavy backpacks filled with homework that often drained the joy of learning and time with family. Now, as parents and community members of Lee County, we are witnessing our children walk the same path, burdened by excessive homework assignments that extend well beyond school hours and into the sanctity of our homes.

Recent studies have demonstrated that homework does not significantly improve academic performance, particularly in the lower grades. In fact, a study published by the Center for Public Education indicates that homework in elementary school has little to no academic advantage. From a psychological viewpoint, the American Psychological Association notes that homework can cause significant stress and health issues in children and adolescents.

Lee County students already devote more than seven hours a day to school. Additional hours spent on homework rob them of essential downtime crucial for their development and well-being. This time could be better spent engaging in physical activities, exploring creative pursuits, or simply resting.

Moreover, the pressure of homework limits our children’s time with family, which is vital for emotional growth and support. The family unit plays a critical role in shaping children’s values and providing a sense of security, yet homework often intrudes into this sacred time, leading to frustration and conflict.

We propose the Lee County School District adopt a no-homework policy across all grade levels. This policy would encourage a more balanced approach to education, allowing teachers to focus on in-class instruction and interactive learning strategies that are more effective and engaging.
