The untouched jungle near Los Árboles (Km 12, Cobá Road) is in immediate danger due to a proposed bypass construction project. This development is unnecessary, destructive, and ignores the infrastructure already built near the Tren Maya corridor, which should already serve the region’s needs.

Environmental Concerns
This project threatens a globally significant ecosystem. The jungle here sits above one of the most fragile and important underground water systems on Earth, including the Sistema Sac Actun—one of the largest underwater cave systems in the world. These flooded caves and cenotes are interconnected and sensitive to surface disruption.

Recent reporting indicates that environmental groups have accused federal forces of building infrastructure directly over these cave systems without proper authorization, putting the aquifer at serious risk. Construction above these caves can cause collapses, contamination of freshwater, and irreversible damage to a system that took thousands of years to form.

Destroying this doesn’t just mean cutting trees—it means endangering the entire underground water network that sustains life across the region.

Lack of Transparency
The community has not been properly informed or consulted. In fact, even authorities have acknowledged the need to redo environmental impact assessments after discovering more about the underground cave systems beneath the proposed route.

This raises serious concerns: how was this project approved in the first place without fully understanding what lies beneath?

Community Impact
This bypass threatens the long-term sustainability of our community. Increased traffic, noise, and environmental degradation will impact daily life, property values, and the eco-tourism that this depends on.

The Riviera Maya’s identity is built on its beauty—its jungles, cenotes, and archaeological heritage like Cobá. Damaging the environment undermines the very foundation of the local economy.

Call to Action
We demand an immediate halt to this project until a full, transparent environmental impact assessment is conducted, and the community is genuinely consulted.
