Allow dog boarding and rescue in Independence MO

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!

We are contacting you today because we’ve run into a problem with the City of Independence.

For the last three years we have done pet sitting as a home based business. It turns out we - along with every other dog sitter or person rehoming a found dog on Craigslist - are breaking city code.

So far the only option we’ve been told we can pursue at this point is to rezone our property Industrial without a change to city bylaws.

Rezoning will likely not be approved by the city. Even if approved it would be bad for our property (insurance, etc) and not help the other people in Independence in the same position.

According to the council this bylaw was all because of a single complaint. This was unrelated to us and years ago. The action taken is extreme, everyone we have talked to believe it is unjust. They have eliminated any recourse for us within current city code.

Will you please sign our petition for delivery to the city councilmen and mayor to request a change of this code?

We would like to find a way to work with the City to resolve this in order to still be able to sit for your beloved fur babies, and get the lost ones home!

I’ve listed contact information below if you would like to do more. Thank you so very much for helping support us!

PS -

There have been some questions about the exact bylaw in question. Basically boarding and rescue are banned anywhere zoned residential. From what I have been told around 10 years ago (the time of the previous complaint) this was disallowed. The ability to get any kind of permit or special use exception was removed. With your help we can change this!
