Greetings, Damon Barone, Alief ISD parent, taxpayer, and alumnus.

When looking at the school boards operating procedures, which you all created:

The Mission statement states, “Alief ISD in collaboration with parents and community will provide an exemplary education…

The introduction states that the leadership team must create an atmosphere that invites parents, students, staff, and community members to become partners in the educational process.

The Core Beliefs and Commitments states that the board’s actions will be taken through the lens of and based on principles of equity.

The boards operating procedures, under ethics for school board members, subsection Trustworthiness in Stewardship, states that the board will be responsive to the community by seeking our involvement in district affairs, and by communicating priorities and concerns.

My concern is that during each regular school board meeting, and school board workshop the board has its board committee report updates on the agendas so that the updates and committees may be discussed, ironically not on tonight’s agenda.

What is not provided to the public is an opportunity for us to attend these committee meetings, because you all do not post the committee agendas, so not post the times which the committees are scheduled to meet, or do not post the locations which these board committee meetings are being held; your committees are making recommendations to the school board, which you all approve based upon those recommendations.

I am asking that the board please post the full agendas of each board committee on the district’s website within 72hours of committee meetings, with the times and locations of each committee meeting, as well as put the committee meeting dates and times on the school board calendar on the district’s website.

I am also asking that the board begin to have all supporting documents from each board meeting, such as board books, or all documents used to justify your votes and decision-making processes as board members, be posted on the district’s website, along with agendas.

The boards practice of not sharing this information in advance with the public

·        does not give the impression that the school board is collaborating with us parents and community members;

·        does not give the impression that the school board is creating an atmosphere that invites parents, students, and community members to become partners in the educational processes;

·        does not give the impression that the school board’s actions are being taken through the lens of and based on the principles of equity;

·        and does not give the impression that the school board is being responsive to the community by seeking our involvement in district affairs;

all of which is stated that the board will do in the Board Operating Procedures which you all created.

Damon Barone, Alief ISD parent, taxpayer, and alumnus.
