We need to remind ourselves what Cemetery Management Rules do.
Whether they are the current Cemetery Management Rules, our proposed Cemetery Management Rules, or whatever future version of the Cemetery Management Rules Edinburgh Council’s Culture & Communities committee decides...
They do not, and will not EVER, prevent ONE SINGLE PERSON from entering a cemetery for valid reasons.
It is dogs we are talking about here, not people – even then, it is not ALL dogs.
Nobody is suggesting stopping PEOPLE doing anything by a rule change.
People can still:
· Visit cemeteries to spend time with their loved ones interred there
· Visit cemeteries for the peace, contemplation, tranquillity, beauty, and solace
· Visit cemeteries for mental health benefits
· Visit cemeteries as a safe secure place
· Visit cemeteries to enjoy the history of the cemetery and its inhabitants
…and the countless other reasons that people visit a cemetery.
We are only asking that, in some cases, they do that without their dog.
Dog owners are already asked not to bring dogs to numerous places, for very valid reasons, such as a risk to public health, risk of infection, noise disturbance, food hygiene etc.
A hospital
A GP surgery
A dentist surgery
The cinema
The theatre
The zoo
Restaurants
We are simply asking that cemeteries are added to that list, for the valid reason of RESPECT.
RESPECT FOR THE BEREAVED
Who can possibly argue that is a bad thing?
We need your help more than ever in these final few weeks, to send as strong a message as possible to Edinburgh Council.
