As mentioned in our Weekly updates, we recently applied to the Scottish Parliament to run a petition. The application process requires you to give a fair amount of information and has strict rules. You can read about these rules here:
https://petitions.parliament.scot/help#rules
The petition application then goes to the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions team at the Scottish Parliament, to review and decide whether the petition request can be granted.
We are delighted to announce that our application has been successful, and the petition has been published.
It is now live at this link:
https://petitions.parliament.scot/petitions/PE2087
We are much more specific in this petition:
Pass a law making exercising a dog in a cemetery an offence
Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to pass a law making exercising a dog in a cemetery an offence punishable by an on the spot fine for infringement.
We now need signatures…lots of them!
Share the petition link far and wide in Scotland…whereas our Change petition is primarily aimed at addressing the issue locally with Edinburgh Council, this Scottish Parliament one is national.
The stages of the process now are:
- The Citizen Participation and Public Petitions team will send the petition to the Scottish Government, who have one month to provide an official response. This response is then published on the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions website and will be sent to us for any comments.
- The Citizen Participation and Public Petitions team also request that a briefing be prepared by their research centre, SPICe, which will be published on their website when it is available.
- Once all this information is received, the Committee will consider our petition, the Scottish Government response and SPICe briefing at a meeting, and then agree on further action. We will be informed in advance when this meeting is scheduled to take place.
Thank you all again for your support. It is hugely appreciated - we are very aware that we are asking you to sign another petition, however we cannot do this alone, we need your "people power" help to keep the momentum going.
Many thanks,
Paul & Andy
