The Issue

The current 4 lane configuration for the length of this residential arterial allows and even encourages speeding and other poor driving behavior.  It is very difficult for pedestrians to get across this street safely.  When a driver in one lane stops for a pedestrian, drivers in the other lane proceed unsafely through the intersection because they cannot see that there is a pedestrian crossing.  There are schools, libraries, community centers, churches, a food bank, senior and low income housing and many private homes with driveways located on or within close proximity to this street.  Too many deaths and crippling accidents have occurred on 35th Avenue SW.  City of Seattle, please redesign this street to a more safe configuration, including reducing the lanes from two each direction to one each direction plus a center turning lane in the areas between major intersections. These safety improvements need to be made as soon as possible before another tragedy occurs.
