My Opinion on Measure L Recently I got a lot of people’s email asking how to vote on measure L because they are very confused by the yard signs and flood of mailers. I don’t have time to response your email one by one, so here is my opinion on measure L for your reference. I am voting YES on measure L, the reason is very simple: I pay my garbage fee $34 per month because I don’t want to leave the garbage in my house or my back yard. I pay a garbage company to haul away my garbage, so I don’t suffer the stink. Voting NO on L is the exactly the same as paying a garbage company to dump your garbage into your house or backyard. Will you do it? You will say NO without any hesitation! If you simply just dump your garbage into your backyard, you would pay zero dollars to the garbage company. No fee can be cheaper than zero dollars garbage fee. Therefore, it is crystal clear that you should vote YES on L. Folks, please vote yes on measure L. Don’t be fooled by big money or those mailers paid for by the Newby Landfill owner, Republic Services Inc. If we vote no on L, it will give San Jose government an excuse to grant the expansion permit to Newby Landfill since they need more time to fulfill the garbage disposal contract. So if we lost on measure L, the Newby Landfill expansion permit will follow. Folks, do you know why Republic Services Inc. is willing to spend so much money $350,000 or more on this small contract with Milpitas (10% of the Newby Landfill’s capacity)? Because Measure L will be serving as a bridge for them to get the Newby Landfill expansion permit. That is what they really want! You may claim you can’t smell it and you can tolerate it, but please have mercy on those folks including thousands of kids who suffer the odor daily and the potential health impact. The city with a garbage stink has no future! If you really love your city, please vote Yes on L. It doesn’t make sense to pay for disposing of your garbage from your kitchen to your backyard! Let’s vote Yes on L to haul away our garbage! Please don’t forget signing for Oct 26th Newby Landfill Expansion final decision making meeting at http://www.tinyurl.com/newbyfinaldecisionmeeting. Free buses will be provided. Picking up time is 5:00PM at Marina Grocery store. Two days left to sign up! Thanks! Jennifer Strohfus Jose S. Esteves - Milpitas City Mayor “By selecting Waste Management, the City of Milpitas has opted for the lowest bid through a fair, open and competitive process. If approved with Measure L, this decision by the City of Milpitas will make lower disposal cost a reality for all Milpitas residents. I am strongly supportive of Measure L and I encourage every Milpitas voter to vote Yes on L on November 8.” Ro Khanna - Candidate for Congress, California 17th District “I am deeply attached to the issues of reducing utility costs, improving traffic, delivering quality city services, and reducing the odors affecting Milpitans. Measure L hits all these right notes, and for that reason I am supporting Measure L.” Debbie Indihar Giordano - Milpitas Council Member, Candidate for Milpitas Mayor “I support the city council’s decision to lower garbage rates and reduce waste disposal nuisance.” Richard Tran - Candidate for Milpitas Mayor “After listening to all Milpitas residents, I fully support YES on Measure L. Furthermore, I am against the landfill expansion and have a 100% commitment to ending the landfill operations. Unlike other candidates for mayor, I have never accepted any money from Republic Services, not then and not ever. Residents’ quality of life and Milpitas families are first.” Gary Barbadillo - Milpitas Council Member “I support Measure L which upholds the city council’s decision in the selection of Waste Management as our garbage disposal provider. I stand by the integrity of the selection process that considered all the relevant factors of a better service and balanced costs. This was through a fair, open and competitive bidding process. Yes on L is the right choice for Milpitas.” Marsha Grilli - Milpitas Council Member “The Milpitas City Council conducted a fair, open and competitive process. I stand by our decision to provide the best services at the best price to our citizens. Vote Yes on L.” Evelyn Chua - Milpitas Emergency Preparedness Commissioner, Candidate for Milpitas Council “I support the City Council’s decision to grant the disposal contract to Waste Management where disposal location is in South San Jose.” Gwan Alisantosa - Candidate for Milpitas Council “My vote is Yes on L. The reason is very simple because I am looking at it as a matter of principle and process. Measure L is to uphold city council decision and I support the decision in selecting the lowest disposal cost from responsible bidders that were willing to compete on a level playing field.” Althea Polanski - Former Milpitas Vice Mayor “The selection of Waste Management went through a legal process by the Milpitas City Council and I strongly support their decision. It is important to do competitive bidding for services that impact the citizens of our city.”/span> Rob Means - Milpitas Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association Secretary “In a power struggle between my city representatives and a huge corporation dedicated to profit, I side with my City!” Milpitas Post “Milpitas’ staff and consultants have concluded that competition will benefit local residents in the pocket-book. To achieve these savings requires a ‘Yes’ vote on Measure L and this is what we recommend.”
