Excess fertilizer runoff contributes to harmful algal blooms including Red Tide. Excess Nitrogen and Phosphorus that runs off our yards during rain events, makes it into our waterways and our oceans. This can increase the frequency, intensity and duration of harmful algal blooms such as Red Tide. Take the Fertilzer Free Pledge today and stop feeding the problem.

Want to do more to help? Here are some other ways you can help mitigate Red Tide:

  • Get Engaged- Vote for politicians that support science-based approaches to climate issues and support clean water regulations
  • Go Native- Plant Florida native plants in your yard that require no fertilizer and less water
  • Install a Bioswale or Rain Garden in your yard- plants act as a natural biofilter to reduce excess nutrients and also remove heavy metals like arsenic and lead
  • If you live by the water, install a buffer strip of native plants along your shoreline or seawall
  • Create more pervious areas around your home that allow rainwater to percolate through the soil instead of running off
  • Eat More Plants- Animal agriculture creates a lot of high-nutrient waste in the form of manure. Eating more plants creates less water pollution and uses less water.
  • Support local water quality improvement projects and initiatives
  • Stay informed & Stay Active- It's easy to forget about Red Tide when it's off shore or not affecting your area. Long term reduction of Red Tide and other harmful algal blooms will require us all to stay vigilant
