Hi everyone!

We’d like to make as much noise as possible about the urgent need for the government to create a UK-wide eating disorder strategy.

Without exposing the dire state of support for people with eating disorders, no one will take us seriously enough to create real, lasting change.

One way you can help is to contact your local newspaper and share your experience via the ‘letters to editor’ page.

You should be able to find your editor’s email address with a quick google search.

Here’s a template to help you along. If you wish to share your personal experience, feel free to add it to the letter as highlighted, otherwise delete that line and send it as it is.

Every time we get the message out there, we increase the changes of positive change happening.

Thank you for your unwavering support! We are making progress and together we will end these injustices!

Letter to Editor

Dear editor,

I was shocked to hear recent news reports showing that eating disorders cost the UK a staggering £9.4 billion in 2020, according to analysis by EY.

The report, co-authored by mental health campaigner Hope Virgo, EY, Dr. Agnes Ayton and Professor Gerome Breen, is another stark reminder of what’s going on in our communities, where every single day people are being left in limbo without any support.

[Talk about your personal experience here if you wish to]

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the mental health of our nation and it’s hit eating disorder sufferers particularly hard. What was already a health crisis before the pandemic has now reached catastrophe with the numbers of people needing support increasing, and an overrun, broken system falling to its knees. People are being turned away from treatment, children are in general wards being tube fed, caregivers don’t know where to turn for support, and there is no sign of this ending.

Among the recommendations in the report is a call for a UK-wide eating disorder strategy with a clear timeline for implementation, a screening programme, increased research, awareness raising and training for healthcare professionals.

Too many lives are being lost and it’s time we gave eating disorders the focus they urgently need.

Yours sincerely,

Your name and location
