From High Court Room No.18 👇🏻 my report
As of February 23, 2026, the Calcutta High Court expressed strong dissatisfaction with the state’s inaction regarding illegal constructions on the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) and hinted at the need for central forces to ensure compliance. Justice Amrita Sinha criticized the delay in clearing encroachments, following the recent fire incident at a warehouse in Nazirabad.

Key Details from Recent Proceedings (Up to Feb 23, 2026).
Demolition Order:
The court has reiterated its directive to take immediate action against illegal, unauthorized structures, particularly those causing pollution or blocking water flow in the EKW area.

Utility Restrictions: Reaffirming previous orders, the court emphasized that no electricity or water connections should be provided to unauthorized buildings on wetlands.

Transparency Measures:
The East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority (EKWMA) was ordered to publish a detailed list of all demarcated protected land and, in particular, the survey numbers where construction is strictly prohibited, both on their website and in newspapers.

Compliance Report:
The EKWMA was required to submit a detailed report on actions taken against illegal constructions by the hearing date.

Registration Ban:
The registrar of assurances and other authorities are instructed not to register any property or deed related to illegally constructed structures in the wetland area.
The court has intensified its crackdown, noting that unchecked construction is severely impacting Kolkata's drainage system and ecological balance.

Next Hearing Date - 16th March 2026
