Well, through the efforts of a signatory to this petition, who, incidentally, signed it just a day after its creation in December 2016, we have already secured recognition for Tom Crean in the shape of this scientific vessel - RV Tom Crean.
That historic decision, announced by the Marine Institute on January 31st, under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, finally brought about long-deserved state recognition for Tom Crean which was the aim of this campaign from it's conception in 2010.

Yesterday, I also had it officially confirmed, by the Department for Defence, that Tom Crean's name still remains under consideration for the new Irish Navy flagship, which is still in the planning stages.
In time, we could be participating in another celebration if LÉ Tom Crean takes to the seas - who knows?

The two ships serve different purposes yet both are an appropriate fit to honour Tom Crean and after a century of his epic story remaining in the shadows, naming the flagship of the Irish Navy after Crean, would be a great accolade for Ireland's greatest mariner.

That the Multi-Role vessel is also to have full hospital facilities and will remain ready to react to humanitarian disasters across the world, renders it most suitable to bear the name of a legend who was renowned for his life-saving feats.

And so with this in mind, the petition will remain open for anyone wishing to add their name to the 16,345 who've already signed it. As the new Multi-Role vessel still has to go through several phases and processes, it may be some time before the name of the ship is revealed but continuing to add names here will give us a greater chance of a second victory so please do keep sharing this link to raise awareness for others who may wish to sign it.
