Support Organic Lands Management in Durango, Colorado
The Issue
A Resolution establishing an Organically Managed Lands Program for the City of Durango was signed into action in 2012. In the resolution, a vision is clearly stated to remain accountable to goals such as:
- Extending organic management practices to all City Lands
- Converting from conventional to organic methods in a timely and efficient manner
- Acknowledging building healthy soil takes long-term committment
- City staff receiving ongoing education in current organic management practices and educating and informing the public
Unfortunately, the resolution, under the broader City of Durango Sustainablity Action Plan, has not be adhered to. In fact, the resolution has completely lost ground. Today, there are no truly organic parks in Durango. The two that are claimed as organic, are currently "rescue" treated/spot sprayed with synthetics.
We now have a large body of scientific evidence that shows the environmental risks associated with chemical exposure and how these substances adversely affect children, soil organisms and water sources - these are the same pesticides that the city of Durango currently uses.
Consequently, we are asking the City to honor the resolution by moving forward with the committment made in 2012. Overall, we believe the city should move in direction of greater environmental and social responsibility and organically managing our lands is one step in the direction of greater stewardship.
Please sign the petition to show your support of organically managing our City lands including parks, schools and athletic fields.
