Major Brands: Use Sustainable Palm Oil and Production Practices
We understand that palm oil is extremely cost efficient, has created jobs for thousands across the world, and demand for the product is only increasing. However, the production of palm oil has raised many environmental and social issues.
In terms of environmental concerns, palm oil causes the loss of tropical forests, the emission of greenhouse gases, reduced biodiversity, water pollution, and habitat destruction. In 2007, the United Nations Environment Programme released a report stating that about 98% of Indonesian forests would be destroyed by 2022 if the rate of deforestation of the time stayed the same, because of legal and illegal practices, fires, and plantation growth. The destruction of these forests, along with natural animal habitats, also leads to the further endangerment of already critically endangered species, including terrain types of elephants, tigers, and orangutans.
Socially, the acquisition of land for palm oil plantations have been quite immoral, with the land being developed without taking into consideration indigenous populations present in the area, and without their compensation.
Our consumer-based society needs to make major changes and work together in order to ensure our future, and be good neighbors to those living in the communities around us.With this petition, we ask that the companies listed below work with the World Wildlife Foundation to ensure their practices become or continue being sustainable. This includes but is not limited to; joining the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), committing to and pledging to start/continue buying only certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO), and publicly reporting their progress.
The companies we are targeting are listed on the World Wildlife Foundation's Palm Oil Scorecard with scores below a 4/9.
Dear companies, please join other major brands in leading the industry in sustainable practices. "Only three companies used 100% segregated CSPO in 2015 – Arnott’s, Danone and Ferrero.” (palmoilscorecard.panda.org).
