Kristy Baughman started this petition to DuBois Area School District

When the kids at our bus stop were nearly run over by a driver who ran the bus stop sign (and flashing lights), it was brought to my attention that the buses our children ride on DO NOT have road facing cameras or the cameras on the stop signs to capture the plate number of the offending driver.

THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE SPAN OF A WEEK.

The lack of this footage is a serious issue, because it prevents law enforcement from prosecuting the drivers that endanger our children. I learned this while dealing with local law enforcement about the issue had. These drivers do not suffer the consequences of their actions and are still on the road.

There have been several tragedies in the past few weeks, regarding distracted drivers and children being killed while entering or exiting a bus. This was not an isolated incident.

These cameras are necessary safety equipment. They not only help law enforcement apprehend and prosecute these drivers, but it acts as a deterrent to other drivers committing the same offenses.

The penalties that can be imposed will work, but law enforcement has to be able to identify and prosecute the offenders.

At the time the decision was made on whether or not to purchase and install these cameras, it was determined that it was not in the budget. It is my opinion that ensuring the safety of our children while entering and exiting the buses on the way to school should be a top priority.

It is my goal, with this petition, to make it known to the board that these cameras are a necessity. That as parents, the safety of our children at the bus stop is a priority. The board needs to take the appropriate action to get these cameras on ALL BUSES in the district.
