A big win today for the Little Wicomico River!
Today’s VMRC approval of $2.6M for emergency dredging of the Little Wicomico River Jetty reflects strong coordination between the Dredge the Little Wicomico Jetty, VA! coalition, Northumberland County, and the Northern Neck Planning District Commission (NNPDC). Most importantly, it reflects the impact of broad community support.
Every Change.org signature and every public comment submitted through the VMRC portal mattered-and was noticed. Your voices made the depth of community support unmistakably clear. Thank you to everyone who made the drive to attend in person, who tuned in online, who submitted comments, who signed the petition, and who sent good thoughts our way today.
Northumberland County and NNPDC will now complete a few final items requested by VMRC to finalize the permit. At the same time, NNPDC has already been preparing the dredging bid package — so momentum is already underway.
If all continues on schedule, we are hopeful to see a contract issued and dredging begin later this year toward the late fall/winter.
This is a major milestone made possible by an extraordinary grassroots effort: showing up in person, tuning in online, wearing yellow, submitting comments, signing petitions, and standing together for public safety, working waterfronts, and Chesapeake Bay access.
This success belongs to all of us. Thank you for being part of it.
More updates soon.
