Dear Governor, It came to my surprise that your city/state had a plan to build a statue of Ho Chi Minh at the Donaupark. In the 1980s, the Times Magazine in the USA has made a list of political genocidal criminals starting with Mao Tse Tung, Stalin, then Hitler. In the list, if my memory is still fresh, Ho Chi Minh was enlisted at about the same rank with Idi Amin of Uganda. Have you seen any statue of Mao Tse Tung, Stalin or Hitler in Austria? Any street named after a political genocidal criminal or after a Communist poltician? Ho Chi Minh’s name was not even present in Russia or in the former USSR, China or in the neighboring countries of VietNam like Laos and Cambodia? During his lifefime, it was estimated that more than a million people perished under the cruelties of his Vietnamese Communist Party. After his death, how many more perished in the City of Hue during the Tet Offensive and during the summer of 1972? How many more perished in the open ocean after the fall of the Republic of VietNam by taking the risks of jumping in rickety boats to get out of the country instead of living under the tyranny of a Communist regimen? They left everything behind not because of the shattered Communist economy but because of the total lack of freedom and the abominous greed of the Communist officials who took everything from them as war spoils. Austria is so far away from Communist VietNam. Austria ideals are so far removed from Communist ideals. Politically what will you gain from this act of building a statue of such a bloodthirsty individual? I just don’t want people of the world to think that you, Governor, has become Hannah Arendt’s disciple by considering Ho Chi Minh’s acts as “the banality of evil”, the way she treated the abominable conduit of Adolph Eichmann during the Holocaust. I just don’t want your city/state to carry the opprobrium to be the first place outside VietNam to celebrate such a bloodthirsty murderer. For these reasons, I respectfully urge you to collect all datas concerning this despicable individual before putting his statue on a pedestal somewhere in Austria. Sincerely yours,
